BY THE TIME STEFAN reached the door to the Council offices, his brood was in full swing and Margaret noticed his dark countenance as he walked in the door.

“Good evening, sir,” she said tentatively.

“Good evening, Margaret. I need you to pull my personal calendar for the next two weeks and bring it to my office immediately,” he ordered, marching straight to his desk. As he walked by her it occurred to him that he wasn't the only one in the room that could probably still smell Tara's sandalwood perfume.

“Yes sir,” she answered, sounding a bit confused. “Give me just a moment.”

He leaned back in the large leather chair and looked at the ceiling. What in the world was he thinking? It was nearly midnight and he had spent half of his working day in her bed. If he kept this up, it was going to cost him more than time.

Tara.... It had been nearly two weeks since the night of the costume party and she had managed to invade his thoughts nearly every hour of every day. Two contrived phone calls offered him the sound of her voice, but with the catastrophe of Lillian's collapse and surgery, he had seen no proper opportunity to see her again. That is, until fate intervened tonight. His intentions were pure in stopping to visit Gabriel and Lillian; there was a small hope that she was there as well, but it wasn't his primary motive. When she walked into the kitchen and surprised him, he had to restrain himself; just the thought of her lips again had him nearly babbling like an idiot. Gabriel must have loved that little exchange.

Furiously, he tapped his knuckles with an ink pen. “Margaret?” he snapped. What in the world was taking her so long?

“Yes sir, I'm sorry, sir,” she said hastily as she bustled into his office. Quickly she sat down and opened a small leather book. “I see that you have a dinner with Mr. Barnes and Mr. Hartley tomorrow night, a fundraiser in Atlanta for the Cerebral Trauma Foundation on Saturday... nothing else until next Tuesday, and then Miss Bell is coming to spend the evening with you on her way through town and will most likely stay in your guest suite for the day on Wednesday...”

“Cancel that,” he said briskly.

“Sir?” she questioned. Ainsley Bell was another vampire whom he had been friends with for years. They never developed a romantic relationship exactly, but always saw each other when possible, spending a few pleasant hours together. What did they call it these days? Friends with benefits? Regardless, his assistant didn't appear to like the idea of brushing this woman off.

“Tell her I have to be out of town, that I have a merger to oversee, just come up with something, Margaret, and let me know which excuse you use. I'll deal with the fallout later.”

“Whatever you say, sir. I'll make the call immediately.” She scribbled a note in the calendar. “Beyond that, there's nothing on the personal agenda until next weekend.
